Resident Promotion Policy
Each resident’s progression and promotion through the surgical residency will be judged on an annual basis based on a point system. A minimum of 150 points per year will be required to advance to the next level of training. The point system is based on medical knowledge, clinical evaluations, academic accomplishments and teaching criteria. In addition, residents can loose points for disciplinary actions (see attached table).
The point system is designed to allow residents who perform adequately in the major areas of surgical education to progress without difficulty. Residents who demonstrate the initiative and desire to excel will be rewarded appropriately through this system. Inadequate or substandard performance should also be evident through this system allowing corrective actions to be taken prior to more severe problems or deficiencies.
The point total for each resident will be reviewed at each evaluation (see evaluation policy). The annual resident achievement award will be based on this point system with the top point getter receiving the David R. Antonenko, MD, PhD Award and the two runners-up receiving Resident Achievement Awards. These awards will be given at the Department’s annual graduation and Chief resident banquet.
