APPLICATION PROCEDURES FOR THE DIVERSITY TUITION
WAIVER PROGRAM
Recognizing the educational benefit of a culturally diverse
student population, the State Board of Higher Education adopts a tuition waiver
program at the University of North Dakota. Special emphasis of this policy is to
recruit, assist, and retain enrolled members of federally recognized American
Indian tribes and Alaska Natives and Villages, and economically disadvantaged
students.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicant must meet one of
the following definitions for eligibility under this program:
A.
Enrolled members of federally recognized American
Indian Tribes and Alaska Natives and Villages as defined pursuant to the Alaska
Native Claims Settlement Act, and as such constitute a political group
officially recognized by the United States government or any individual who is
able to document American Indian lineal heritage to the satisfaction of the
Indians into Medicine (INMED) Program.
B.
Members of a culturally diverse group, who are defined
as persons of different age, and persons with
disabilities, and/or life experiences; and individuals of different cultural,
racial, or ethnic heritage, especially historically underrepresented groups
(African American, American Indian, Asian American, or Hispanic).
C.
Persons who are economically disadvantaged, who are
defined as persons who meet the federally established guidelines for the Loans
for Disadvantaged Students (LDS) Program.
D.
The University of North Dakota Diversity Statement
further describes cultural diversity for this waiver program.
SPECIAL EMPHASIS WILL BE
GIVEN TO
A.
For one year tuition support, particular emphasis will
be given to American Indian medical students usually funded for four years of
attendance on an Indian Health Service (IHS) Scholarship. Examples include:
1. First year Indian medical
students who are accepted by the School of Medicine after the deadline for IHS scholarship
application, or
2. Indian medical students
participating in a modified curricular schedule which has been approved by the School
of Medicine’s Student Performance and Recognition Committee (SPRC) and which
extends the student’s program of study beyond four years of attendance.
B.
To American Indian medical students. Particular emphasis will be given to American
Indian medical students from the twenty-four tribes of the five state area of North Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota, and
Wyoming.
C.
To individuals who are economically disadvantaged.
ACADEMIC CONSIDERATIONS
A.
Past academic performance may be used in determining
initial eligibility.
B.
In order to be eligible for renewal, recipients must maintain
acceptable academic standards as defined for the student by the SPRC.
C.
Generally, recipients should be enrolled full-time.
AMOUNT OF WAIVERS
A.
Waivers will not exceed the amount of tuition. Tuition waivers do not include fees, books,
board, room, or other costs of attendance.
B.
Partial waivers may be awarded. However, the total dollar amount of all
waivers in a given year may not exceed the dollar amount allocated by
the Dean’s Office of the School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
C. Generally, awards will be made for an academic year. Awards can be made for a longer or shorter duration.
TO APPLY
A.
Complete a Cultural Diversity Tuition Waiver
Application. For top consideration, this
must be received in the Student Financial Aid Office by April 15.
B.
Complete a Free Application for Federal Student
Financial Aid. For top consideration,
this must be processed before April 15.
C.
Attach a Verification of Tribal Enrollment or Lineal
Heritage.
