Parent Faculty Teams
Participants for teaching teams are recruited with an effort to include faculty currently teaching in a variety of early
intervention disciplines and parents who have expertise in raising a child with a disability and are able to share their
expertise with future professionals. Parents are recruited to represent a variety of experiences, which provide a comprehensive
perspective of the priorities of families who have disabilities.
Pre-service Workshop and Course Implementation. An interactive video network training workshop provides parent/faculty
teams with the opportunity to collaboratively design curriculum for an early intervention pre-service course, which they will
co-instruct. During the duration of the course implementation, parent/faculty teams are contacted periodically to monitor the progress of each class and this project component.
Curriculum Models and Resources. At the completion of each course, parent/faculty teams are provided with forms to
submit a brief summary of their course, including objectives, syllabus, student grading requirements, and a description of
classroom activities or field experiences that were utilized to incorporate family-centered early intervention strategies into the
class. Surveys are also completed by students at the completion of each co-instructed course. This information is compiled
and made available for other team members and the funding agency to review. This information also serves as a guideline for
future projects of this type and as a resource for training.
Parent Guest Lecturer
It is evident that it is difficult for many parents to commit to serving as a full term co-instructor due to the extensive time requirements. This component of the project is designed to broaden the range of parents who may wish to participate in the
project and increase the scope of perspectives and activities made available. Parents share with students/professionals
regarding family issues influencing service provision, discuss specific influences of a diagnosis, and are available to answer
student's questions.
Lecture evaluation forms are also distributed. |
