Objectives of the Elective:
1. Learn the principles of medical genetics.
2. Apply these medical genetics principles in the clinical setting.
3. Understand the provision of medical genetic services in a rural state.
Instructional Activities:
1. Patient evaluations, discussions, and counseling participation.
2. Textbook readings in the area of medical genetics.
3. Oral presentation on a medical genetics topic of the student's own choice.
4. Attendance at lectures presented by the preceptor.
Standards of Performance (Outcomes) that Indicate Attainment of Objectives:
1. Participation in clinics, patient evaluations, etc.
2. Be able to perform a medical genetics evaluation.
3. Be able to discuss pertinent genetic principles involved in each case.
4. Be knowledgeable of the diagnostic criteria, prognosis, and management of individual patients with specific genetic disorders.
Criteria for Grading:
1. Must master medical genetic principles satisfactorily, as determined by daily use and formal oral exam.
2. Must have satisfactory rating or above on pertinent clinical competencies listed on Fourth Year Student Clinical Performance Evaluation.
3. Must satisfactorily present topics of choice.
4. Must satisfactorily pass final practical examination.
