The final grade in Pediatrics is based on three components as follows:
60% of the grade is derived from preceptor evaluations
25% of the grade is derived from Pediatric subject exam
15% of the grade is derived from oral examination
The standard University of North Dakota School of Medicine & Health Sciences evaluation tool is implemented for preceptor evaluations. The oral examination is developed from a series of several brief patient case vignettes.
In order to complete the Pediatrics clerkship and receive a passing grade the totaled average of the three components must be 75 or greater. In addition, the student must pass each of the three components as follows:
a preceptor composite grade of > or = 75
an oral examination grade of > or = 75
a Pediatric subject exam score of >or = 64
In order to pass, a student cannot receive "does not meet expectations" on any component of the preceptor evaluation, and must have a preceptor composite score of > 75. The department chair may decide to alter the grade because of extraneous circumstances, allow the student to repeat the eight-week clerkship in total, or give the student a failing grade.
If the oral examination score is less than 75 the oral examination may be repeated one additional time with another examiner. If the repeated oral examination score is again less than 75 the student fails the course.
If the student receives a score less than 64 on the shelf examination this test may be repeated one additional time. If the student receives a score less than 64 on the repeat Pediatric subject exam, the course is failed.
In order for a medical student to be considered for honors in their Pediatric clerkship the student must meet all of the following requirements:
- Student's composite score must be in the top 20% of the clerkship as calculated at end of academic year
- Pediatric Subject Exam score > than the 50 th percentile
