Windows 95 Dial-Up Adapter Setup for Minot

Not for use with NDUS Connect 32 software from NDUS Computer Center.

Dial-Up Adapter installation

  1. Double click on your "My Computer" icon.
  2. If you have a Dial-up Networking folder, skip to Verify modem installation, else:
  3. Click on your Start button, then Settings, then Add/Remove programs.
  4. Click on the Windows Setup tab.
  5. Highlight Communications and click on the Details button.
  6. Check Dial-up Networking and leave the any other features checked or they will be uninstalled.
  7. Click on OK. You will be prompted to insert your Windows 95 installation disk (CD or 3.5").
  8. Restart your computer.
Install TCP/IP Protocol (Only if not present under Start Button, Settings, Control Panel, Network)
  1. Click on the Start Button.
  2. Choose Settings.
  3. Choose Control Panel.
  4. Choose Network.
  5. Click on Add.
  6. Choose Protocol.
  7. Click on Microsoft.
  8. Choose TCP/IP.
  9. Click on OK. Click OK again. You will be prompted to insert your Windows 95 installation disk (CD or 3.5").
Verify modem installation
  1. Verify your modem installation
  2. Click on the Start button.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Click on Control Panel.
  5. Double click on the Modem icon.
  6. If your modem has been installed it will be listed. If not, click on the Add button.
  7. Allow Windows 95 to detect and install your modem.
How to check your Windows 95 version
  1. Right click on the icon My Computer on your desktop.
  2. Select Properties.
A System Properties window will appear. The General tab contains Registration, Computer info, as well as, the version of Windows 95. Example: System: Microsoft Windows 95 4.00.950 B. Version A appears as an "A" or no letter designation.

VERSION A ONLY

Scripting Tool Installation
You will need a copy of Dscript.exe and ndus.scp.  Available for download on Computer Services home page.

  1. Copy dscript.exe and ndus.scp to a "safe" directory, for example, C:\Windows.
  2. Run dscript.exe by clicking on the Start button, choose Run, type the path and file name in the text box. Ex: c:\windows\dscript.exe.

  3. This will extract files necessary for the installation including rnaplus.inf.
  4. Using Windows Explorer, find the file: rnaplus.inf. In this example, you can find it at C:\windows\rnaplus.inf.
  5. Right click rnaplus.inf and choose install from the menu. Installation is automatic.


Configure your Dial-up Connection
(THESE DIRECTIONS WILL NOT WORK FOR BISMARCK, GRAND FORKS OR FARGO)

  1. Double click or open "My Computer".
  2. Double click on or open the Dial-up Networking folder
  3. Click on "Make New Connection"
  4. Type a name for the computer you are dialing: ex: UND-Bismarc
  5. Select a modem: Click on the down arrow, this should reveal your modem. Highlight and click on Next.
  6. Fill in the phone number to the campus of your choice.
  7. Area Code: 701
  8.  Minot - 857-7644
  9. You have successfully created a new Dial-up Networking connection. Click on Finish.
  10. Right click on the newly created Dial-up icon and choose Properties.
  11. Confirm the phone number and modem.
  12. Click on the Server Type button.
  13. Confirm the Type of Dial-Up Server: PPP: Windows95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet.
    Advanced options:
    Choose TCP/IP.
  1. Click OK.
  2. Create a shortcut to the UND dialup icon by right click on the icon and selecting "Create shortcut" from the list. You will be prompted that you cannot create a shortcut here but do you want to move it to your desktop. Choose "yes".
  3. Close all open windows.
Attach your script to a Dial-Up Profile
  1. Click of the Start button, choose Programs, Accessories, then Dial-Up Scripting Tool. Your newly created Dial-up profile will be listed in the text area on the left.
  2. Highlight the profile (ex. UND-Bismarck).
  3. Locate or browse to the script file ndus.scp. (Our example is C:\windows\ndus.scp)
  4. Highlight the file and press OPEN.
  5. Click on the Apply button.
  6. Skip to The Connection for both Version A and B.


VERSION B ONLY!
(THESE DIRECTIONS WILL NOT WORK FOR BISMARCK, GRAND FORKS OR FARGO)

Configure your Dial-up Connection

Copy this into a "safe" directory.

  1. Double click or open "My Computer".
  2. Double click on or open the Dial-up Networking folder.
  3. Click on "Make New Connection".
  4. Select a modem: Click on the down arrow, this should reveal your modem. Highlight and click on Next.
  5. Fill in the phone number to the campus of your choice.

Click on Next.

Type a name for the computer you are dialing: ex: UND-Minot

  1. You have successfully created a new Dial-up Networking connection. Click on Finish.
  2. Right click on the newly created Dial-up icon and choose Properties.
  3. Confirm the phone number and modem.
  4. Click on the Server Types tab near the top of the window.
  5. Confirm the Type of Dial-Up Server: PPP: Windows95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet.

  6. Advanced options:
    Choose TCP/IP.
  7. Click on the Scripting tab.
  8. Browse for the file NDUS.scp.
  9. Click on OK.
  10. Create a shortcut to the UND dialup icon by right click on the icon and selecting "Create shortcut" from the list. You will be prompted that you cannot create a shortcut here but do you want to move it to your desktop. Choose "yes".
  11. Close all open windows.
The Connection for both Version A and B
  1. Double click on the newly created shortcut to Dial UND located on you desktop. Input your user name and password.

  2. IMPORTANT NOTE: Your user name is your full email address ex: mevans@medicine.nodak.edu and your password is your email password.
  3. Verify the phone number is correct.
  4. Verify the modem is correct.
  5. Click on the connect button.

  6. You should be able to hear your computer dial in. Once a connection is made, the computer will verify your username and password. You will get a prompt saying you are connected at particular baud rate.
  7. Now you can minimize your connection window and run your web browser or check email.
