Search your disks for Virus Files

This is a quick and easy way to search your disks for some signs of the ILOVEYOU type viruses, that most people should be able to perform without too much trouble. If an infection is seriously suspected, there are more things that need to be looked at, but this is a good place to start.

These screen captures were taken from a Windows 98 machine, but Windows 95, NT, and 2000 should be just about identical.

First, select Start/Find/Files or Folders ... as shown below:

A dialog box as shown below should appear. Fill in the fields as shown in the example, to look for files named: *.vbs looking in My Computer (your entire computer), including subfolders. Once you're ready, click the Find Now button

Once the Find process starts, the little magnifying glass should start wiggling around and the dialog box will expand to show the results of the search. The list might be larger than will fit in the window, so you may have to use a scroll bar to move up and down the list to check everything out.

Some machines will have legitimate VBS Files, so if you see anything DON'T PANIC. Just keep an eye out for things that are listed in Eudora folders, or that have odd names containing words like "Love" or "Joke".

Another thing to look for are filenames that have multiple periods, such as mypic.jpg.vbs That type of thing is a definite sign of the virus.

The sample picture shown above doesn't happen to show any virus files, those are just normal VBS files that were on the computer I used to make the screen captures.

Call Computer Services if have any questions or concerns about what you find.
