Configure your e-mail client
'

These are the generic settings needed to configure an e-mail client such as Mozilla/Outlook/Eudora to work with a medicine.nodak.edu e-mail account.

If you're using the web-based e-mail at http://medicine.nodak.edu, you don't need to worry about configuration because it's all taken care of for you.

POP/IMAP Server - used for checking e-mail

  • Server name: cyrus.undsmhs.net
  • SSL Encryption required on alternate port (993 for IMAP, 995 for POP)
  • Installing a new e-mail program and not sure what to chose when asked to decide between POP and IMAP? The short answer is: use IMAP. POP is quite limited in what it can do, and is not very suitable for checking your account from multiple computers.

SMTP Server - used for sending e-mail

  • Server name: smtp.undsmhs.net
  • Authentication required
  • Either SSL or TLS Encryption required
    • use TLS on port 587 or 25 (25 is being blocked by some ISPs to fight spam, and can be interfered with by antivirus software - so 587 is probably preferrable).
    • use SSL on port 465

LDAP Server (optional) - used for looking up addresses

  • Server name: ldap.undsmhs.net
  • Base String must be blank, which is the default in Mozilla & Outlook. In Eudora the default is "c=us", which will need to be deleted.
