Mark was raised in Dickinson and Bismarck, North Dakota. He received
his undergraduate degree from North Dakota State University in 2005 and received his master's
degree in psychology from the University of North Dakota in 2007. As an undergraduate, he
worked in several research labs, volunteered at a crisis intervention center, and worked at
a residential facility for individuals with severe mental illness. Mark has had varied
experiences in clinical health psychology during his training at UND. He has worked with
the Center for Health Promotion and Prevention Research (CHPPR) on the evaluation of a
school-based obesity prevention program (Coordinated Approach to Child Health - CATCH)
and a worksite health promotion program. Mark's master's thesis examined emotional and
physiological responses to antismoking advertisements and his dissertation followed-up
this work by examining similar responses to fear-based and disgust-based antismoking ads.
His clinical training experiences have included cognitive-behavioral therapy experience
in the department's training clinic and health psychology services in a rehabilitation
hospital. Mark is completing his predoctoral internship in clinical psychology
at Duke University Medical Center.
