Evaluation of a Worksite Fruit and Vegetable Program
As part of a comprehensive worksite wellness program for state employees, CHPPR organized
delivery of fresh fruits and vegetables twice a week from 1/2007 to 5/2007 to each of the
four worksites participating in the program. Initial evaluation of this fruit and vegetable
program was conducted one month after its completion using an online employee survey.
Results showed that a greater number of employees reported consuming 3 to 4 as well
as 5+ servings of fruits and vegetables after the program than before the program.
The current project funded by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is evaluating whether
the initial improvements in fruit and vegetable consumption have been maintained over the
ensuing 18-month period, and whether any improvements in fruit and vegetable intake have
generalized to employees’ families.
Evaluation
procedures will include:
- An online fruit and vegetable survey available to employees at all four original worksites.
- Semi-structured, qualitative interviews with employees and
their partners to assess fruit and vegetable intake at home.
- Worksite health council member interviews to assess the
extent to which a worksite has continued to use strategies and provide activities intended to
promote fruit and vegetable consumption beyond the original program.
