Graduate Program

The following information on admission requirements and recommendations apply to both M.S. and Ph.D. program applicants. The application process occurs through the Graduate School. Information and forms are available from the UND Graduate School Website.

If further advice or help would be beneficial to an applicant's decision-making process, we encourage her or him to contact our Director of Graduate Education, Dr. Kenneth G. Ruit, who can be reached by e-mail, telephone, FAX, or letter.

Coursework:
Admission into any of the graduate programs offered through our department is dependent upon the applicant's demonstration of good academic skills and undergraduate training. Minimally, the applicant successfully will have completed the following coursework:
  • General biology or zoology (one year sequence)
  • General chemistry (one year sequence)
  • Organic chemistry
  • College algebra
  • A course in one of the morphological sciences (human anatomy, comparative anatomy, embryology, histology).

Coursework in calculus and physics, as well as cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, and/or genetics is HIGHLY recommended. The applicant must have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 3.00, and a cumulative GPA of 3.50 in graduate level course work, if applicable.

GRE Scores:
Scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test and/or the MCAT must be submitted with the application. The GRE Subject Test is not required, but applicants are encouraged to submit these scores if they have taken the test

Application Deadline:
There is no application deadline per se. However, it is better to apply well in advance of the anticipated fall semester start date, which typically is the last week of August. We encourage applicants to submit a completed application as early as is practical, but before mid-February if at all possible. If you are planning to apply but don't have all your material assembled (e.g. GRE scores), contact Dr. Kenneth G. Ruit and let him know of your plans. Since the first year of graduate work is structured around a fall semester entry point, applications received too late for a fall matriculation may be held for consideration for the following school year—unless the applicant has successfully completed coursework at the graduate level that is comparable to the fall semester courses.
