Tribal College Science Coordinator

This recruitment is made on condition and in anticipation of an award establishing an IDeA Network of Biomedical Research Excellence (INBRE) in North Dakota.

Description

The mission of the North Dakota INBRE will be to build biomedical research capacity by serving universities and Tribal Colleges within the state. The Science Coordinator position will be a full-time five-year NIH-funded position with a starting salary range of $40,000 to $48,000 plus fringe benefits. The Coordinator will be responsible for hands-on, daily implementation of INBRE-sponsored science enhancement initiatives across all five Tribal College campuses within North Dakota. The Coordinator will report to the Executive Director of the North Dakota Association of Tribal Colleges (NDATC) in Bismarck, but may be based elsewhere, including at a Tribal College campus. The coordinator will be expected to travel extensively among INBRE institutions within North Dakota.

Pending award of the INBRE, review of applications will begin July 15. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.

Responsibilities

  1. Work with administrators and science faculty at all five Tribal Colleges to enhance undergraduate science curricula and programming, with the goals being a): an enhancement of science content and science course opportunities for each of the five colleges, and b): a greater level of matriculation of Tribal College students to baccalaureate-level science programs.

  2. Lead an enhanced utilization of and best-practice training in distance education for sciences, particularly through use of science laboratory videoconferencing facilities on each Tribal College campus.

  3. Serve as the primary contact with Tribal College science instructors.

  4. Assist the NDATC Director in overseeing budgetary matters associated with this position.

  5. Recruit Tribal College students into INBRE-supported research programs on other campuses and into four-year and advanced programs in the sciences.

  6. Initiate and coordinate a student science seminar series (or equivalent experience), shared among the Tribal Colleges and extended to other students in other INBRE institutions.

  7. Coordinate participation of Tribal College faculty and students in INBRE-wide activities such as workshops, conferences, and other activities.

  8. Maintain contact with Tribal College students who continue on to four year and advanced degrees.

  9. Work routinely with the INBRE administrative staff at the University of North Dakota and North Dakota State University to provide evaluative and other information.

  10. Work with INBRE participants to write grant proposals for continued development of biomedical research capacity at the Tribal Colleges.

Qualifications

  • Masters Degree (Ph.D. preferred) in science or science education-related area.

  • Must be sensitive and responsive to the missions of the participating Tribal Colleges.

  • Must possess significant knowledge and experience with reservation education issues.

  • Knowledge of Native American people, history and culture is
    desirable.
