The
school is administered through four regional "campuses,"
based in Fargo, Bismarck, Minot and Grand Forks,
which represent the four quadrants (NW, NE, SE,
SW) of the state. Through this structure, the education
and training of undergraduate medical students (those
working toward the doctor of medicine (M.D.) degree)
and postgraduate residents (those who do hold a
medical degree and are pursuing medical specialty
training) is coordinated and supervised.
Practicing
physicians on each campus serve as teachers, providing
a broad spectrum of experience in medical education.
Hospitals, clinics, physicians' offices, nursing
homes and other community healthcare facilities
provide the clinical settings for undergraduate
and postgraduate medical education. Community resources
for medical care services - such as mental health
centers, alcoholic treatment units, public health
clinics - also are utilized in the education programs.
In addition to community hospitals, UNDSMHS-affiliated
teaching hospitals include the Veterans Administration
(VA) Medical Center in Fargo and U.S. Air Force
Base hospitals in Minot and Grand Forks.
